Summary
An investigation examines an auxiliary crane winch failure during drillpipe backloading from Ewing Banks 826 platform A to a supply vessel. The load and wire rope struck the vessel before entering the water. Ring gear cracking was attributed to possible previous overloading, whose occurrence could not be established. No injuries occurred.
