Summary
Investigation of Vellee’s flooding and sinking during passage from Fraserburgh to Kilkeel. The ingress source remained unknown, although failure of seawater piping or fittings through electrolytic corrosion was considered probable. Analysis examines failed bilge alarms, impaired pumping capacity, maintenance shortcomings and delayed coastguard notification. All three crew abandoned to a liferaft and were rescued.
