Summary
An investigation examines a machinery-space fire aboard Multitank Ascania near the Pentland Firth. Thermal oil escaped from a pump seal and/or a valve flange; ignition remained unidentified. Firefighting, helicopter evacuation, failed towing and anchoring are described. The tanker was eventually recovered with minor injuries, light damage and no pollution.
